Piero della Francesca (1420–1492) was one of the great artists of the early Italian Renaissance. His paintings on religious subjects are marked by their simple serenity and clarity. He was also interested in geometry and mathematics, and was known for his contributions in these fields. In this volume, numerous large-sized illustrations showcase the artist’s oeuvre, and authoritative texts illustrate the decisive stages in the artist’s life and in the development of his work, explaining their significance in the context of his time and for the following generations of artists.
